Iraq Henceforth To Declare January 1st As "Sovereignty Day"

(Posted on Friday, January 2, 2009)

Source: The Arab Monitor (Baghdad)

Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, announced that he would ask the Council of Ministers and the Presidency Council to declare January 1st as a national holiday, from now, called "Sovereignty Day".

Earlier last month, Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri Al-Maliki, had called for such a public holiday (10-Dec-2008).

Note that January 1st is already a public holiday in Iraq, and it is not yet clear if the current name of the public holiday will be replaced (eg. Cuba), or whether it will be appended to the name of the holiday (eg. Taiwan).
