Iraq Announces Provincial Polls Public Holidays

(Posted on Saturday, January 24, 2009)

Source: Zawya (Baghdad)

Iraqi election officials have announced that Saturday, January 31, and Sunday, February 1st, 2009, had been declared public holidays throughout Iraq, on the occasion of the upcoming provincial elections

The announcement of public holidays to match the dates of the upcoming provincial polls (the first election since 2005) matches the forecast that we had made last November, when the date of the polls was first announced (10-Nov-2008).

Note that the dates of the curfew are Friday and Saturday, January 30-31, 2009, but the actual public holidays are Saturday and Sunday (Fridays being the weekly day of rest in Iraq, anyways).

The declaration of multi-day public holidays at the time of elections is a staple of Iraqi life (see, for example, 02-Oct-2005 and 19-Jan-2005).
