Jamaica's Labour and Social Security Minister, Pearnel Charles, has announced that Monday, August 3, 2009, would be a public holiday in Jamaica, as the August 1st Emancipation Day public holiday falls on a Saturday in 2009.
Most interestingly, he went on to say that his government's position was that public holidays falling on a Saturday should be given a day in lieu on the following Monday, a stark reversal of the information campaign of the mid-80's when the JIS (Jamaican Information Services) went on a campaign to educate the nation that only when a holiday fell on a Sunday, would its celebration be moved to the following Monday.
Labour Day 2009, another public holiday, falling on a Saturday in 2009, had already been announced as being observed the following Monday (08-Jan-2009).
The Minister made no mention, though, of Boxing Day (December 26) which also falls on a Saturday in 2009.
