Jersey Declares Liberation Day Day In Lieu Public Sector Holiday

Jersey's Chief Minister Senator, Terry Le Sueur, has announced that government and public sector workers in Jersey would get a day in lieu public sector holiday on Monday, May 11, 2009, to compensate that this year's Liberation Day public holiday falls on a Saturday.

As per the announcement, States staff who have to work on May 9th, 2009, will be paid double time, while private sector firms will be free to make their own decisions over the day off.

Though it has become an established practice to declare a day in lieu public holiday following any fixed-date public holiday that occurs on a Saturday, and most the Jersey online sources all assume it will be the case, there is currently no automatic provision to grant additional days in such circumstances.

For years (31-May-2004), the Legislation Committee of Jersey's Assembly has been considering the draft bill, "Draft Public Holidays And Bank Holidays (Jersey) Act 200-", which would mandate a day in lieu public holiday, following any fixed-date public holiday that occurs on a Saturday.
