Today, the Saeima (Latvia's Parliament) approved in a second reading amendments to the ''Law on Holidays and Remembrance Days'' which will add Orthodox and Old Believers' Christmas (January 6 and 7) as official public holidays in Latvia.
This represents the second to last step in this legislation which was first proposed in 2002 (20-Dec-2002), then rejected in early 2003 (16-Jan-2003) proposed again late in 2003 (24-Dec-2003) and then passed in a first reading in 2006 (25-May-2006).
The bill will now face a third and final reading on Thursday, February 12. Most commentators seem to feel that, this time, the bill will be approved and become law, particularly as Latvia's Minister of Finance is quoted as saying that he does not object to two extra public holidays.
