Maldives SAARC Summit Likely To Be Delayed

(Posted on Sunday, March 8, 2009)

Source: Miadhu News (Male)

The Maldives's foreign minister, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, has indicated that the 16 SAARC Summit, originally scheduled for October 2009, would likely need to be moved to the first quarter of 2010.

The date of the first day of this summit (usually running from Friday to Sunday) is expected to be declared an official public holiday in the Maldives, as it was last year in Sri Lanka (16-Jul-2008).

Last year's change of President in the Maldives did raise some doubts that the new President would be less prodigal with public holidays, but our fears have since been allayed (02-Mar-2009 and 22-Nov-2008).
