Nepal To consider Adding More Muslim Public Holidays

(Posted on Monday, March 16, 2009)

Source: The Himalayan Times (Kathmandu)

As part of a six-point deal, designed to end the five-day long agitation of the Muslim community, the government of Nepal agreed to "... positively consider to provide public holidays in the festivals of the Muslims".

Recall that, in the summer of 2007 (30-Jun-2007), the government of Nepal had already been threatened with street protests if it did not agree to add Muslim public holidays, though that promise was ignored afterwards, the same year (15-Oct-2007).

Muslim public holidays were finally added for 2008 (01-Oct-2008), but only as part of a massive crop of additional public holidays catering to all the religious minorities of the country (28-Dec-2007).
