Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD, or Pesedistii) has prepared a draft law that would create a new annual official public holiday, ziua Micii Uniri, on January 24, the date when Wallachia and Moldavia were reunified in 1859.
Despite last year's addition of official public holidays for the 2 days of Pentecost (18-Mar-2008) and for the Assumption (09-Oct-2008), the PSD party's leadership has promised to support the draft bill, because it feels that Romania remains a country with few public holidays as compared to other European countries.
The bill, if it passes would probably not pass in time for 2009, but that is not a big loss for Romanians, as January 24 will fall on a Saturday, in 2009, and on a Sunday, in 2010. Both Saturdays and Sundays are non-working days in Romania.
