Swaziland's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the upcoming Umhlanga (Reed Dance) public holiday would occur on Monday, August 31, 2009.
In recent weeks, there had been reports by Swaziland's Education Minister, Wilson Ntshangase (15-Aug-2009), and Swaziland's Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Macford Sibandze (29-Jul-2009), that the Reed Dance public holiday would occur at the end of August, but so far no official announcement had been made (even though the actual week-long Umhlanga had already begun).
Though the announcement of the date of the Reed Dance public holiday always comes late, there is usually a week or two prior notice (see, for example, 15-Aug-2008 and 28-Aug-2007).
