The Consultative Commission (Kommission des Kantonsrates) of Switzerland's Zürich Canton has rejected an SVP motion to cancel the May 1st public holiday and replace it with a "joker" holiday to be chosen from a shortlist of other possible commemorative dates.
The motion, tabled early last year (13-Jan-2008), was meant to avoid the annual leftist riots that cause widespread damages in Switzerland's financial capital, Zürich.
May 1st, or Labour Day, is currently an official public holiday in 9 of Switzerland's Cantons: Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Jura, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Ticino, Uri, and Zürich.
A parliamentary iniciative to make May 1st a national public holiday was defeated in 2001 (12-Nov-2001).
