Yesterday, Thailand's Governing Cabinet instituted the principle of bridge public holidays for the public sector, whereby Tuesday or Thursday public sector holidays would be linked to the adjoining weekend by declaring the Monday or Friday a bridge public holiday.
Though there are a few public holidays in 2009 that would fit the new system, such as was the case for January 2 (09-Dec-2008), the one specifically mentioned by Deputy Government Spokesman, Suparak Khunha, was that of Monday July 6 which occurs before the July 7 public holiday for Asanha Bucha Day (the day before the Buddhist Lent).
In that context, the public sector would have been expected to work on Saturday, July 4, 2009, however the recent nationwide declaration of a public holiday on Monday, July 6, 2009 (18-Feb-2009), makes that recuperation day unlikely.
The cabinet resolution also officially gives a day in lieu public holiday to the public sector on the Monday that follows any weekend public holiday (though such days were taken unofficially already).
