Turkey's Labor and Social Security Minister, Faruk Çelik, has announced that a proposal to declare May 1st as an official public holiday would occur after the March 29 local elections.
He was reacting to an earlier call by Turkey's main opposition party (the CHP) to declare both May Day and Novruz as official public holidays (04-Mar-2009).
Proposals to declare these 2 dates as official public holidays are not new. A stillborn proposal to declare Novruz a public holiday was tabled at the 11th hour, last year (20-Mar-2008), while a similar proposal to declare May 1st a public holiday almost did pass (19-Apr-2008 and 21-Apr-2008) and in the end was observed as such, unofficially, in Istanbul (01-May-2008).
