UAE Changes Date Of Upcoming Private Sector Holiday

(Posted on Sunday, March 1, 2009)

Earlier this morning, the UAE's Minister of Labour, Saqr Gobash, announced that it had decided to change the date of the upcoming private sector public holiday, from Monday, March 9, to Saturday, March 7, 2009. This change applies to all employees in the private sector in the UAE.

The date of March 9th had been announced, less than 2 days ago (27-Feb-2009), as this year's private sector holiday on the occasion of the Prophet's Birthday.

Asked why the private sector holiday was declared for a Saturday rather than Sunday, as many companies in the private sector have weekend offs on Friday and Saturday, the Minister of Labour said: "As far as I know, the majority of companies in the private sector have only one day off, which is Friday and went on to explain that the UAE's labour law specifies that the Prophet's birthday be observed as an official holiday, but that it does not specify on which day it should be held.

The corresponding public sector holiday date, declared last Wednesday (25-Feb-2009), remains on Sunday, March 8, 2009, a day earlier than in most of the rest of the Muslim world.
