USA's Capital Considering Dropping April 16 Public Holiday

The mayor of the US capital, Washington DC, Adrian M. Fenty, has proposed abandoning the April 16, Emancipation Day municipal public sector holiday.

This public holiday, limited to the civil service of the city of Washington DC, was signed into law by former Mayor, Anthony A. Williams, in 2005, to commemorate the day, in 1863, when former US President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill freeing the District of Columbia's slaves.
