Venezuela To Consider Renaming National Day Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, April 20, 2009)

The Vice-President of the Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV), Freddy Bernal, has called on the government to either declare April 11 a national public holiday, or rename the April 19 public holiday as Día de la Batalla de San Félix.

It would not be the first time that Venezuela's current government had tinkered with the names of public holidays. In 2002, President, Hugo Chavez, decreed that the October 12 public holiday be renamed from "Día de la Raza" to "Día de la Resistencia Indígena" (12-Oct-2002).
