The first results of a Chinese government sponsored online poll to solicit public opinion on a date for "national tourism day" are coming in with speculation that local governments are "forging fake support" for their recommendations.
Some of the dates pushed by China's regions in the poll organized by the China Nation Tourism Administration (CNTA) on sina.com, are: March 29 (Jiangsu province), May 19 (Zhejiang province), December 26 (Hunan province), and July 5 or 15 (Sichuan province).
Note that the date proposed by Hunan province, December 26, corresponds to Mao's birthday, and had already been proposed, last fall (26-Sep-2009), as a new public holiday by Mao Xinyu, a member of China's National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and the grandson of late Chairman Mao Zedong.
According to the newspaper China Daily, a CNTA official had told them that "eventually, the decision to select a date and whether or not it will be a public holiday lies with the State Council".
