UK Promised New Public Holiday

The UK's Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has promised a new annual public holiday (or "bank holiday" as public holidays are called in the UK) called "Pride in Britain Day", but only once economic recovery from the current downturn is secure.

Although the above caveat is vague, it is safe to say that, with the UK economy currently hurting badly, the hoped-for recovery will most likely not happen in time for Parliament to vote a new public holiday effective in 2011.

It also seems unlikely that this new annual public holiday would begin being observed in 2012, as an additional one-off public holiday was declared, late last year (27-Dec-2009), to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, in 2012.

Therefore, our best guess is that this new public holiday would begin in 2013 ... provided Gordon Brown, and the Labour Party, win the general elections scheduled for this spring.
