Australian 2012 Queensland Public Holidays Changes

(Posted on Saturday, November 5, 2011)

The Premier of the Australian State of Queensland, Anna Bligh, has finally announced her government's decision as regards the moving the Queen's Birthday non-working public holiday to the second half of the year in the Australian State of Queensland.

A couple of months ago (18-Sep-2011), Premier Bligh had released a discussion paper which suggested moving the Queen's Birthday non-working public holiday to the second half of the year, as there are 8 public holidays in Queensland during the first half of the year to June, as opposed to just 2 in the second half of the year until Christmas.

Beginning in 2012, the Queen's Birthday non-working public holiday, in the Australian State of Queensland, will be moved from the 2nd Monday in June to the 1st Monday in October.

Although Queensland will be the only Australian State to observe the Queen's Birthday non-working public holiday on the 1st Monday of October, the Labour Day public holiday is also observed on the 1st Monday of October in Labour Day the ACT, New South Wales and South Australia. In addition, the Queen's Birthday non-working public holiday in Western Australia regularly coincides with the 1st Monday in October (as it will in 2012).

A change in the date of the Queen's Birthday public holiday date has also been proposed in the past in Tasmania (10-Jun-2008) and Victoria (26-Sep-2008), while Northern Territory Committee co-chair, Fran Kilgariff, has proposed cancelling the Queen's Birthday public holiday in exchange for the creation of a Northern Territory Day public holiday (04-Jul-2009).

To avoid the problem of sporting events already having been scheduled for 2012 based on the 2nd Monday in June rule, Premier Bligh also announced that a one-off public holiday for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee would be observed in June 2012 in Queensland ("In 2012 as a one-off transition, we will maintain the holiday in June and have the new one in October"). She went on to add that Industrial Relations Minister, Cameron Dick, would soon introduce a bill in Queensland Parliament to amend the 1983 Holidays Act accordingly.

Currently, the following countries have declared a one-off public holiday to commemorate the royal diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne: The UK (27-Dec-2009), the Isle of Man (10-Sep-2010), Jersey (29-Sep-2010), the Cayman Islands (31-Aug-2011), Guernsey (29-Jul-2011), the Falkland Islands (09-Oct-2011), and Gibraltar (19-Oct-2011).

Note that, in some cases, as seems to likely be the case for Queensland, the additional 2012 public holiday is declared on Monday, June 4, 2012, and in other cases on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, depending if the last Monday of May is an annual public holiday, or on a totally different date as is the case for the Isle of Man.
