Iraq Declares Heat Wave Public Holiday Today

(Posted on Monday, August 1, 2011)

Source: National Iraqi News Agency (NINA)

The government of Iraq has declared a one-off public holiday for today, Monday, August 1, 2011, in Baghdad, Diyala province in central Iraq, and all of the south of Iraq, due to the current heat wave.

Temperatures are expected to rise further on Tuesday and Wednesday, and we may therefore see these 2 days declared as additional public sector holidays.

This is the first time such a weather related public holiday is declared in Iraq, but neighboring Iran regularly declares weather and pollution-related public holidays (29-Nov-2010, 22-Nov-2010 and 07-Jul-2009).
