Source: The Hindu (Chennai) - Summary: The Tamil Nadu State government has declared Monday, September 15, 2008, a one-off public holiday on account of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai’s birth centenary.
All government offices, educational institutions, government-run organisations and boards, offices of local bodies, banks, including cooperative banks and public undertakings in the State will remain closed. September 15 will also be a holiday for the Madras High Court, both in the Principal Seat here and the Madurai Bench, and all subordinate courts in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Asked why the holidays was announced at such a late date (the night before the holiday), Chief Minister Karunanidhi replied that he wanted it to be a surprise; "Had the announcement come earlier, people would have gone on an extended weekend holiday, forgetting Anna,''.
