Israel To Consider Abolishing Election Day Public Holiday

(Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008)

Source: The Jerusalem Post (Jerusalem) - Summary: The Speaker of the Knesset (Israel's Parliament), Dalia Itzik, intends to soon convene a special session of the Knesset to pass legislation cancelling the public holiday on election day.

For the moment, all general elections are public holidays in Israel. But the Speaker's associates expressed confidence that she would be able to pass the bill, considering the current economic downturn worldwide, and the recent rejection of a referendum day public holiday in Israel (our September 8, 2008, news update and our September 5, 2008, news update).
