Kenya Declares November 6 Public Holiday To Celebrate Barack Obama's Election

(Posted on Wednesday, November 5, 2008)

Source: Associated Press (Kogelo, Kenya) - Summary: The President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, has declared Thursday, November 6, 2008, as a one-off public holiday in Kenya to "celebrate the historic achievement by Senator Obama and our country".

President Kibaki was among the first foreign heads of state to congratulate President-Elect Barack Obama and declared Thursday a public holiday in a statement issued minutes after Republican candidate, John McCain, conceded.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, however, has confirmed that ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations would go on uninterrupted. Mr Paul Wasanga, the council secretary and Chief Executive Officer, said because of logistical reasons, it was impossible to interrupt the examinations.
