11 Nov 2009 (Informatia Zilei-Bucharest) Romania's Secretary of State, Fatuloiu Valentin, has announced that it will force public sector employees to take eight days of unpaid public sector holidays, at the end of the year in a bid to cut the budget deficit.
31 Aug 2009 (Mediafax-Bucharest) Romania's Interior Minister, Deputy Dan Nica, has announced the dates of the upcoming Presidential elections (November 22 and December 6) and has implicitely ruled-out the declaration of a one-off public holiday on that occasion.
21 Jun 2009 (Citinews-Cluj) The Romanian media are reporting that an electoral bridge public holiday is likely on Monday, November 30, 2009.
20 Jan 2009 (Ziare-Bucharest) Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD, or Pesedistii) has prepared a draft law that would create a new annual official public holiday, ziua Micii Uniri, on January 24, the date when Wallachia and Moldavia were reunified in 1859.
23 Dec 2008 (Mediafax-Bucharest) The Government of Romania has announced the official list of public holidays in Romania for 2009.
09 Oct 2008 (Mediafax) Romania's lower house of Parliament passed a law making August 15 (the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, also know as the Assumption) a public holiday, starting in 2009.
19 Aug 2008 (The Press Bureau Of The Romanian Patriarchate) On the recent feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God (August 15, aka. Assumption), His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, announced that he had filed a request with the Romanian Parliament to make August 15 one of the Romanian legal public holidays.
05 Jun 2008 (Mediafax) A draft law published in Part I, no. 217/ 21.III.2008 of Romania's Official government Gazette, would create 2 additional annual public holidays.
30 Apr 2008 (Mediafax) The Romanian Government has now announced that Friday, May 2, 2008, would be a one-off, full national public holiday, to bridge the gap between the public holiday of Labor Day and the weekend.
18 Apr 2008 (De Jure-Chisinau) The President of Romania, Traian Basescu, sent the request for a review of the recent law amending the Labor Code, asking for the introduction of an additional annual public holiday on August 15, the date of the Assumption.
18 Mar 2008 (Adevarul) Romania's lower house of parliament (Camerei Deputatilor) has adopted a law that adds the 2 days of Pentecost, Whitsunday and Whitmonday, to the official list of public holidays in Romania.

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Romania are governed by Article 134, Title III, Chapter 2, Section 3, of the Romanian Labour Code (Codului Muncii). The lower house of Parliament (Camerei Deputatilor) has the final authority to amend the list of public holidays in Romania.
Unirii Day: is Romania's national day public holiday, commemorating the unification of Transylvania with the rest of Romania at the end of World War I, in 1918.
Religious Holidays: The Romanian Labour Code allows for "two days for each of the two annual religious holidays, declared as such by legal religious denominations, other than Christian, for the persons belonging to those religious denominations".
Several religious holidays including feasts of St. John (January 7), St. George (April 23), Sts. Peter & Paul (June 29), St. Mary (August 15), St. Michael (November 8) and St. Nicholas (December 6) are observed in rural areas .
