Background Information |
|
Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Netherlands are regulated by the Factories Act 1946 (LS 1946 - NZ 4 to 1949 - NZ 4) as amended by the Factories Amendment Act 1972.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
Remembrance Day:
Every year on the 4th of May at eight o'clock in the evening, the nation stops for two minutes of silence in remembrance of the victims of all wars since the beginning of the Second World War. Remembrance services are held around the country. Flags are flown at half-mast.
Liberation day:
Though celebrated every year, Liberation Day is a public holiday only every 5 years, occurring in 2000, then 2005 and so on.
New Year's Eve:
Although New Year's Eve is not a public holiday, some shops and businesses may be closed or will close early on this day.
The Queen's Birthday (Koninginnedag) used to be moved from April 30th to May 1st when April 30th was a Sunday, but this was changed in 1980 following protests from Labour Unions who did not want to have the Queen's Birthday on the same date as the May Day parades (and, most importantly, did not want to lose a public holiday if both were observed on the same date).
Netherlands International Codes NL and NLD (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .nl (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Netherlands information and news: Netherlands Bank (Netherlands central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Netherlands maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Netherlands), and Wikipedia (includes Netherlands commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays). |
