10 Aug 2009 (Oficina de Recursos Humanos del Estado Libre Asociado-ORHELO) The public sector's human resources department of the government of Puerto Rico (ORHELA) has released the "Memorando Especial Núm. 11-2009", which lists the public sector holidays for the year 2010.  23 Jun 2009 (Primera Hora-San Juan) Puerto Rico's Chamber of Representatives has approved, and sent to the Senate, the Proyecto de la Cámara 1387 which would sharply reduce the number of public sector holidays in Puerto Rico.  06 Apr 2009 (Primera Hora-San Juan) The Vice-President of Puerto Rico's House of Representatives, Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló, has introduced a bill, Proyecto de la Cámara 1387, which would reduce the number of public sector holidays in Puerto Rico, from the current 19 to 15.  16 Dec 2008 (Primera Hora-Guaynabo) Puerto Rico's Governor, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, has declared 4 additional days of public sector holidays for the end of this year. Background Information

Governing Laws: The list, dates, and observances, of official public holidays in Puerto Rico are regulated by the "Ley para Regular las Operaciones de Establecimientos Comerciales" (also known as the "Ley de Cierre") and the "Código Político, Artículo 387".  Public Sector Holidays: Although Puerto Rico has an impressive tally of días feriados oficiales de Puerto Rico (official Puerto Rican public holidays) and días feriados federales (federal public holidays from the US), only civil servants observe all 21 Puerto Rican and federal public holidays.  Puerto Rico International Codes PR and PRI (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .pr (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Puerto Rico information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Puerto Rico maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Puerto Rico), and Wikipedia (includes Puerto Rico commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
