01 Jun 2010 (Tonga Chamber of Commerce-Nuku'alofa) The government of Tonga has announced that the recently gazetted "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2010" (Act No. 10 of 2010) would take effect immediately, meaning that the date of the upcoming Emancipation Day public holiday will be Monday, June 7, 2010, instead of the previously announced date of Friday, June 4, 2010.  19 May 2010 (The Information Unit-Prime Minister's Office) Tonga's recently-passed "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2010" (Act No. 10 of 2010) has been signed into law by Princess Salote Pilolevu Tuita.  08 Apr 2010 (Parliament of Tonga-Nuku'alofa) The Tongan Legislative Assembly has passed the "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2010" (Act No. 10 of 2010) which moves the date of some of Tonga's official public holidays, when they fall in the middle of the week, to the nearest Monday.  23 Jul 2009 (Matangi Tonga) Tonga's Privy Council has declared Monday, August 3, 2009, as a day in lieu public holiday to commemorate HM King George Tupou V's 61st birthday, which falls on a annually on August 1st.  11 Jul 2007 (Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association-Suva) Tomorrow, Thursday, July 12, 2009, Tonga will celebrate its new July 12 public holiday for the first time.  21 Dec 2006 (Mantagi Tonga Online) The Tongan Government will officially close down for its Christmas and New Year holiday on Friday December 22.  08 Dec 2006 (The Information Unit-Prime Minister's Office) The Tonga Privy Council has approved 2 new public holidays and cancelled 2 existing public holidays. From 2007, onwards, July 12th will be observed as the Birthday of the Heir to the Crown of Tonga, and August 1st will be the Official Birthday of the reigning Sovereign of Tonga.  30 Nov 2006 (Matangi Tonga) The coronation of Tonga's King Siaosi Tupou V has been postponed for 12 months, following the destruction of central Nuku'alofa by riot and fires on November 16.  14 Nov 2006 (Matangi) Following the death of the late king, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, it has been said unofficially that July 4 will no longer be a public holiday in Tonga. Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Tonga are regulated by the Public Holidays Act [Cap 51] (Act No. 8 of 1919, 11 of 1970, 18 of 1988), as most-recently amended in 2006 and 2007, following the death of King Tupou IV.  Weekend Public Holidays: When public holidays fall on a Sunday, they are observed on the following Monday.
