Christmas: The celebration of Christmas as a public holiday in Cuba, was stopped in 1970 (to use that extra working day to increase sugar production). But, after a 30 year absence, Cuba re-established Christmas as one of its public holidays, in 1998, on the eve of the visit of Pope John Paul II .
