Background Information

Governing Law: The list of official public holidays in Togo was originally set out in the Loi No.60-32 du 2 novembre 1960, following independence. The dispositions of that text were amended by the Ordonnance no 79-10 du 2 mars 1979 réglementant le régime des fêtes légales (Journal officiel, 1979-04-01). Most of the dates of the 1960 and 1979 laws were cancelled by the 1987 Loi No 87-08 du 9 juin 1987 réglementant le régime des fêtes légales. Most recently these were amended and regulated by the Loi n° 2006-010 du 13 décembre 2006 portant Code du travail and Article 84 Title 5 of the Togolese Constitution of 1992 as amended by the Loi No 2002-029 du 31 décembre 2002.  In a manner similar to that of Gabon and Equitorial Guinea, beginning in 2007, the government of Togo has begun to rotate the city where the main celebrations of Independence Day are to be held .  Togo International Codes TG and TGO (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .tg (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Togo information and news: Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) (Togo central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Togo maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Togo), and Wikipedia (includes Togo commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

To be safe, you should also verify that no major religious holidays coincides with any planned business trip to Togo.

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Togo that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Togo were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
