Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Ukraine are regulated by the Labour Code, which has not really been overhauled since Soviet times. The list of 10 public holidays is specified in Appendix A of the Labour code.  Eves of Public Holidays: the Labour code stipulates that the working day immediately before a public holiday is one hour less than usual.  Weekend Public Holidays: When public holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday, it is customary for the following Monday to be an official public holiday. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine may also transfer to the Monday preceding or Friday following the public holiday if it falls on the corresponding Tuesday or Thursday.  In addition bridge holidays are often given between a holiday and the nearest weekend, but are also often compensated by having a nearby Saturday declared to be a normal working day. This happened 3 times in 2007.  Finally, note that little business takes place between New Year's Day and Orthodox Christmas.  Ukraine International Codes UA and UKR (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .ua (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Ukraine information and news: National Bank of Ukraine (Ukraine central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Ukraine maps, demographics and economic statistics), and Wikipedia (includes Ukraine commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
