Inspecting a Diary Generation Output File

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Once diary generation is complete, the progress dialog display summary information about the just-generated diary. To simply view the output file in QuarkXPress, click on the View Output button (this is done automatically if you set the property Open Output File to true).

If Q++ issued any run-time messages during diary generation, the List Messages and View Messages buttons will be visible.

Listing Messages allows you to see all the generated messages along with the original text of the textbox that triggered the message. You can also access the help topic corresponding to each type of message.

Viewing Messages does not show you the original textbox's contents, but it does display the resulting textbox from within QuarkXPress.

If the current script contained Saras, and the option perform saras if any was set, and some of the Saras had a "hit", then the List Saras and View Saras buttons will also be enabled.

Listing Saras allows you to see all the generated messages along with the original text of the textbox that triggered the message. You can also access the help topic corresponding to each type of message.

Viewing Saras does not show you the original textbox's contents, but it does display the resulting textbox from within QuarkXPress.

If QuarkXPress has crashed during one of the various stages of diary generation, then the View Output button will be replaced by a button that is linked to the help topics that discuss Quark crashes but you will also be able to view the List of Messages which will often give you an indication of the reason why Quark crashed (usually QuarkXPress generates messages prior to crashing). Because, at that point, QuarkXPress has crashed, you will not be able to use the View Messages button.

If there are no messages generated, but the output file is not as expected, see the section on Problems with the Output Files.

Finally, note that when opening an output file for the first time in QuarkXPress you will sometime encounter the message "This file needs minor repairs". This is a benign message that means that Quark has some house cleaning to do because it uses RGB colors internally while most colors are specified as CMYK.
