QuarkXPress 3 was the last 16-bit version of QuarkXPress on the Windows platform. It's main advantages are speed and low memory consumption compared to later versions of QuarkXPress. There are, however, drawbacks to the use of QuarkXPress 3 :
•As a 16-bit program, QuarkXPress 3 is inherently less stable than the subsequent 32-bit versions of QuarkXPress.
•Using QuarkXPress 3 with Q++ means installing and using both the 16-bit and the 32-bit versions of the database engine.
•QuarkXPress 3 works with Windows 95, 98 and ME, and the first service pack of Windows 2000, but does not function properly with Windows 2000 SP2 and the following service packs. Under Windows XP, however, QuarkXPress 3 can be made to function by specifying that the program should run under the Windows 98/ME emulation layer.
•Image tokens are not available when using QuarkXPress 3.
•Xpress Tags functionality in macros, GenTokens and MiniCalendars are not available when using QuarkXPress 3.
Finally, and most importantly, development of the QuarkXPress 3 Xtension used by Q++ Studio was stopped in May of 2000 and no further development is planned.
The use of QuarkXPress 3.32 is no longer officially supported, but it is still possible to use QuarkXPress 3.32 within Q++ Studio. The following topics cover issues related to the use of QuarkXPress 3.32 :
•QuarkXPress 3.3x installation issues.
•Installing the 16-bit Database Engine.
QuarkXPress 3.32 being a 16-bit application, its use can lead to system instability and is not recommended at all. In particular, the use of QuarkXPress version 3 with Q++ Studio is not supported on Windows 7.
