Text Files Comparison Dialog

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The text file comparer is used to identify the differences between 2 text strings. Usually these string come from text files, but any 2 text strings can be compared. The comparison is performed at 2 levels : line by line, and then for each line, character by character. Note that all comparisons are case-sensitive and that spaces are not ignored.

At the top of the comparer is a list of all the lines contained in either file 1 or file 2. First, each individual line of file 1 is compared with the corresponding line in file 2. The result of this first level comparison is either a perfect match, some differences, or no matching line being found on one side to match, even approximately, the line on the other side.

Lines are color coded according to the overall comparison of each line :

White means a perfect match.

Yellow means that the lines are different.

Pink means that one of the lines has no match, even partial, on the other side.

Once you click on one of the lines, the Details of the that line are displayed at the bottom, using the same color coding as above, and with the text of the selected lines are displayed one above the other.

The number of different blocks found is displayed above the 2 lines of text and to its right is a navigation toolbar that is used to navigate from one difference to the next. The various buttons of that toolbar are :

Scroll to the very beginning of the text. When this happens, there may or may not be any differences visible. Use the button below to jump to the first difference.

Scroll to the left until the very first difference between the 2 lines is visible.

Scroll to the left until the next, previously hidden to the left, difference between the 2 lines is visible.

Scroll to the right until the next, previously hidden to the right, difference between the 2 lines is visible.

Scroll to the right until the very last difference between the 2 lines is fully visible (ie. both the beginning of the difference block and its end are visible).

Scroll to the very end of the text. When this happens, there may or may not be any differences visible. Use the button above to jump to the last difference.

The buttons described above are enabled and disabled automatically to reflect the existence, or not, of additional difference to the left or right of the currently displayed text sequence.
