Tanzania Declares New October 14 Public Holiday

Assistant Press Secretary to the President Maura Mwingira announced that October 14 will henceforth be an annual public holiday in honor of the Father of the Nation, Julius Nyerere.

Earlier that same week, the Zanzibar House of Representatives passed a bill declaring April 7 a new annual regional public holiday, Heroes' Day/Karume Day, in honor of the first Isles' president Shiekh Abeid Amani Karume.
