South African presidential spokesman, Bheki Khumalo, has confirmed that the President, Thabo Mbeki, intends to declare election day on April 14 as a one-off public holiday.

He did add, however, that this may take some time as it must go through parliamentary channels. Recall that, 5 years ago (1999-04-28), South Africa's cabinet had declared that year's election day, June 2, as a nationwide non-working public holiday throughout South Africa.
