The Minister of Labour, Virgilio Gurdián, announced that the afternoon of Thursday, December 7, 2006, would be a public holiday for the civil sector, in anticipation of the December 8 national public holiday for the Immaculate Conception (La Gritería a la Inmaculada Concepción de María).

This one-off half-day public holiday will begin at noon. The Minister went on to say that the private sector was not covered by the announcement but that they were encouraged to do so.

The declaration of the afternoon of December 7 as a public holiday is not systematic, but it has occurred on occasion in the past, such as in 2004 (2004-12-01) and in 2000 (2000-12-04).
