The Philippine military has recommended suspending offensives against communist rebels during Christmas and New Year, the chief of staff said on Wednesday, two weeks after ruling out such a truce (see our story of December 7, 2006).
The military, however, would continue offensives against hundreds of Muslim rebels on a remote southwestern island. The final decision will be taken by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Since 1986, the government has observed a holiday ceasefire with communist and Muslim rebels.
