A national holiday marking the unification of Slovenia's north easternmost region of Prekmurje with then-Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, in 1919, was celebrated for the first time in Slovenia, earlier this month on August 17.

The aforementioned comes as a result of last year's (2005-10-17 and 2005-10-24) Law Amending the Law on Holidays and days in the Republic of Slovenia (Official Gazette. 91/2005 of 14/10/2005) which declared new national holidays for the merger Prekmurje Slovenes with their nation of origin (August 17), Return of Primorska to the Motherland (September 15), Rudolf Maister Day (November 23), and Independence and Unity Day (December 26).
