Arguing that mid-week closures of businesses hurt productivity, the leader of Paraguay's leading trade association, the Federación de la Producción, la Industria y el Comercio (Feprinco), Max Haber, has indicated that he will soon meet with the government to petition it to start using its discretionary powers to move mid-week public holidays to the following Monday.

Under the terms of law 1723/01 (2001-06-29), the President has discretionary powers to move some fixed-date public holidays to a nearby Monday. But so far, these powers have rarely been used (2003-04-29 and 2004-09-16).
