New Zealand Rules-Out Maori New Year Public Holiday This Year

Despite last-minute frantic lobbying, tomorrow, Matariki, or Maori New Year, will not be a public holiday in New Zealand.

Since Minister of Maori Affairs, Dr Pita Sharples, announced last week that the Maori Party had drafted a bill to make Matariki a public holiday (2009-06-17), the issue was all over the New Zealand media.

The New Zealand Employees and Manufacturers Association has dismissed the idea of an additional public holiday, as has apparently, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key.

This would leave as sole option the cancellation of another public holiday, with the Queen's Birthday public holiday and the Waitangi Day public holidays being the most frequently mentioned candidates for removal from the official list of New Zealand public holidays.
