Thailand Club Rules Apply To New Public Holiday

Source: Phuket Magazine (Phuket)
Posted: Sunday, June 28, 2009

A couple of years after the Buddhist Lent public holiday was exchanged for the Asarnha Bucha public holiday, it seems that most bars and "places of indulgence" will be closed on July 7.

This follows the Thai tradition of closing bars and related establishments on all Buddhist public holidays and on the birthday of the Queen.

However the adaptation to this new public holiday was a bit slow, for 2 reasons.

First, the effect of the public holiday change, despite being decreed in 2006 (2006-11-16), was only felt in 2008.

Secondly, the declaration of a bridge public holiday on July 6 (2009-02-18), left open the question of whether the bridge public holiday to a Buddhist public holiday was also a Buddhist public holiday (in which case bars should have closed on both July 6 and 7).
