Late last night, the UAE's Minister of Justice, Dr Hadef al Dhaheri, announced that the Shawwal Crescent Committee had sighted the crescent of the new Moon and that "It has been determined that Eid [public holidays] begins on Sunday [September 20]".
This sighting, which confirms announcements made earlier this week (2009-09-15 and 2009-09-17), is purely formal, as the UAE follows the Saudi Umm al-Qura calendar that is based on astronomical calculations, rather than naked eye sightings.
