The Government of Guangzhou has announced 3 municipal non-working public holidays on account of the upcoming 16th Asian Games.
These 3 additional non-working public holidays are: the opening day of the Asian Games on Friday, November 12, 2010 (already being considered since last spring 2010-05-31), the day of the closing ceremony on Friday, November 26, 2010, and the final day will be during the Asian Para Games on Monday, December 13, 2010.
To avoid a repeat of last year's regional public holidays' cancellation chaos (2009-03-31), the Guangzhou municipality Government also announced that these 3 municipal non-working public holidays had already been approved by China's State Council.
Although generally quite rare in China, and always subject to strict central control (2009-03-26), some regional public holidays have been declared in the recent past, such as the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Shenzhen special economic zone (2010-08-20), the Shanghai World Expo (2010-04-02) and the Beijing Olympics (2008-08-06).
