Malaysian National Sikhs Movement President, Darshan Singh, and opposition DAP party Chairman, Karpal Singh, have petitioned the Malaysian Government to declare Vaisakhi on Wednesday, April 14, which coincides with the Tamil New Year, as an official public holiday.
This request is unlikely to be granted, as Malaysia has one additional annual public holiday, beginning this year (2009-10-19).
Additionally, another Indian festival, Thaipusam, is more likely to be extended nationwide, as it is currently a State public holiday in Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Johor, and was declared a public holiday in the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya a few years ago (2008-01-20).
