The Algerian public sector ministry (Direction Générale de la Fonction Publique) has announced that Sunday, May 1st, 2011, had been declared as a paid non-working public holiday (journée chômée et payée) on account of the upcoming fête des travailleurs (Labour Day).

The aforementioned declaration of Sunday, May 1st, 2011, as a paid non-working public holiday does have an effect as weekends in Algeria are now Fridays and Saturdays, as specified in the "décret n°09-244 du 22 Juillet 2009, modifiant le décret exécutif n°97-59 du 03 Mars 1997", and which took effect on August 14, 2009 (2009-07-24).
