Guyana's President, Bharrat Jagdeo, has announced that Monday, November 28, 2011, would be the date of the upcoming general and regional elections in Guyana.
Recall that, on the occasion of the last general elections (2006-08-23), the Ministry of Home Affairs of Guyana had gazetted Monday, August 28, 2006, as a one-off public holiday "to ensure orderly election day activities".
A subsequent report from the Commonwealth Observer Group on the Guyana General and regional Elections 2006 had stated that "the practice of declaring Election Day as a public holiday should be continued in future elections".
As the date of the previous general election, Monday, August 28, 2006, was declared a one-off non-working public holiday in Guyana (2006-08-23), we deem it highly likely that the government of Guyana will declare Monday, November 28, 2011, as a one-off non-working public holiday to coincide with the 2011 general and regional elections in Guyana.
