Jersey States Deputy, Geoff Southern, has proposed that, Wednesday, October 19, 2011, the date of the next Jersey general election be declared a one-off public holiday.
Deputy Southern's justification is the low turnout in the last general election (34% in 2008).
However, the proposal is likely to encounter stiff resistance due to the recent declaration of Friday, April 29, 2011, the day of the upcoming Royal wedding, as a one-off public holiday in Jersey (2011-01-20) as well as last year's declaration of Tuesday, June 5, 2012, as a public holiday in Jersey to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (2010-09-29).
