Malawi's National Intelligence Service is quoted as saying that the Malawi government is planning to turn President Bingu wa Mutharika's birthday, on February 24th, into a national public holiday.

The birthday of former Malawi president Kamuzu Banda was also a public holiday while he was in power but it was canceled in 1994 by the Bakili Muluzi government. It was then restored as an annual public holiday three years ago (2008-04-10).
