Malaysia's Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, has announced that he would ensure that Thaipusam became a public holiday in Kedah State, if his Barisan Nasional (BN) party were to win the upcoming state elections.

Three years ago (20-Jan-2008), Malaysia's former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had announced that he would consider making Thaipusam, into a full national public holiday.

The same year (20-Jan-2008), Malaysia's Government declared Thaipusam as a an annual public holiday in the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, from 2008 onward.

Currently, Thaipusam is observed as an official non-working public holiday in the states of Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, and Johor, as well as in the federal territories of Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.
