The Director of Public Communication and Corporate Affairs of the government of Malaysia's State of Sarawak, Bakrie Zaini, has announced that the Sarawak State government had finally declared an additional public holiday for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

According to the statement by director Zaini, the additional public holiday will occur because the public holidays for Hari Kebangsaan (National Day) and Hari Raya Aidilfitri (the End of Ramadan) overlap in 2011.

A couple of months ago (24-May-2011), the Chief Secretary to the federal government of Malaysia, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan, has announced that the Malaysian federal government had decided to decide to declare an additional one-off public holiday in September 2011 to compensate the fact that the upcoming Aidilfitri (End of Ramadan) public holiday falls on the same date as the annual National Day public holiday.

However, at that time, it was pointed out that the additional public holiday in the states of Sabah and Sarawak needed the additional public holiday to be gazetted separately, under section 9 of the Holidays Ordinance of Sabah and section 5 of the Public Holidays Ordinance of Sarawak, respectively.

In his statement, director Zaini also pointed out that the date of the aforementioned additional public holiday could be either on Thursday, September 1, 2011, or Friday, September 2, 2011, depending on the date of the End of Ramadan finally settled upon by Malaysia's Conference of Rulers.

But, in practice, we expect the Islamic calendar for 2011 (corresponding to 1432-1433 AH), published (08-May-2010) by Malaysia's governmental Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia, aka. JAKIM) to hold, meaning that the announced additional public holiday to compensate the fact that the upcoming Aidilfitri public holiday falls on the same date as Malaysia's National Day public holiday would be on Thursday, September 1, 2011.
