Philippines Bill Would Declare March 31 Public Holiday

Philippines Representative, Roger Mercado, has initiated a legislative measure which would declare March 31 as an annual non-working nationwide public holiday in the Philippines.

The aforementioned House Bill 4065, is "An Act Declaring March 31 as a National Non-Working Holiday in Commemoration of the First Mass in the Philippines in Limasawa Island", which occurred on March 31, 1521 at Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte (the constituency of Representative Mercado).

Such attempts to declare more religious public holidays are common. Most notably, two years ago (2009-07-07), then Philippines President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, declared July 27 as an annual working public holiday in honour of the "Iglesia ni Cristo Day".
